Home entertainment has always played a large part in our lives, but what was once as simple as sitting in the family room watching your favorite TV show on a bottom of the line TV, has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry with folks snapping up electronics like Blu-Ray players, 60 inch plasma TV’s and home theater systems that run into the thousands of dollars, all so they can enhance their entertainment experience in the home.
Almost all of the major electronics stores now have “experts” assigned to each individual area, but going in with a little knowledge can help you, just in case you get landed with a salesperson that is not quite as up on their area as they should be. Most good home theater systems will require 6 to 8 speakers to properly set up a surround system in either a 5.1 or 7.1 channel surround. If you are not sure of the difference, then the basic rule of thumb is that if you have a large space and a Blu-Ray player in your set-up, then a 7.1 system is the way to go, whereas 5.1 is fine for those with a smaller living area. Most good receivers are fine at handling both, so if you start out with the 5.1, there should be no issues if you decide to upgrade later.
Most home theater speaker systems now come as a matching set, but they can also be bought individually. If going the individual route, you have to make sure that when all the pieces are put into the set up they are “voice-matched”, which is basically a way of saying that they are compatible with one another in order to get a clear, quality sound. The side speakers, usually the tall ones, are the main left and right speakers, and as they are normally placed by the side of the TV, you have to make sure that they are magnetically shielded. The rear or satellite speakers are usually on the smaller side so that they can be placed on a bookshelf or mounted on the wall. The center channel speaker sits on top of the TV, but if you have a wall mounted television, there are also multi-channel sound bars that can be mounted below the monitor. The final piece in the system is the subwoofer and that sits on the floor, usually in an area where it remains somewhat unseen, simply for aesthetic purposes.
Before you head to the store, have a budget in mind and try to stick as closely to it as you can. If you are also picking up a receiver to go with your speaker system, then plan to split the budget evenly between receiver and speakers. Many stores now have an individual home theater room set up where you can listen to different set-ups, so take the time to listen to as many as possible in your price range. By doing that, you will be sure to get the speaker system that is perfect for you.
